Gatekeeper

from Bad Hand - EP by Big Fat Meanies

/

about

Gatekeeper is Big Fat Meanies’ response to anyone who’d dare box them in. By track five of Bad Hand, you notice the group has no intention of lowering the intensity. On the contrary, Gatekeeper sounds the alarm with jaunty rhythms that lead funky bass lines and soulful vocals to the finish line. Through the verses, the band paints an illustrious sonic tapestry where colors weave, but never interrupt until horns lead in a call-and-response-like syncopated breakdown that is sure to blow you away. The group continues with their foot on the gas to the very end where they throw their full force behind a shared rhythmic motif that jumps time signatures into chromatic madness.

lyrics

GATEKEEPER
Boxed into a corner
Think they’re gonna help you out? Well, they won’t.
It’s something that you fight for
So find your own way out
Locked into a prison
Indecision’s tearing down to the bone
Whatever you desire? The fire’s burning out.
//
Stuck here caged in, always waiting
For what? Oh, for what?

Shifting, turning always yearning
For what? Oh, for what?
//
Can’t fight it, try to keep it quiet
The voices shouting give it up
Just reeling, nothing but a feeling
Emotionally tripping up
Gatekeeper, dig a little deeper
It’s never gonna go away
Can’t fight it, so hear me when I say
//
I’m a tough act to follow,
Choking on the truth is such a tricky pill to swallow
But we found a way out
To redefine the kind of thing you sing about
Oh yes
(Oh yes)
Oh no
(Oh no)
The voices in the crowd are in control
Cut those ties say your goodbyes and go

//
Can’t fight it, try to keep it quiet
The voices shouting give it up
Just reeling, nothing but a feeling
Emotionally tripping up
Gatekeeper, dig a little deeper
It’s never gonna go away
(Never gonna go away)
Can’t fight it, so hear me when I say
//
Stuck here caged in
Always waiting
Shifting, turning
Always yearning
//
So this is what you came for?
Show show me what you came for
Show me!
